Streptomycin Sulfate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections, acting by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible organisms and disrupting the initiation and elongation steps in protein synthesis.
Streptomycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis. Most patients with bilateral Meniere's disease treated with streptomycin sulfate titration therapy and followed over the long term have either improvement or relief of their disabling vertigo[3]. Animal experiments have demonstrated severe damage to the vestibular hair cells after streptomycin treatment. The morphologic changes indicated that streptomycin damaged the cytoplasmic granules and the plasma membrane infoldings of the dark cells[4]. A case of community-acquired endocarditis caused by Enterococcus (Streptococcus) faecalis with high-level resistance to gentamicin sulfate but not to streptomycin sulfate is described[5].
