描述

D-Serine, also known as (R)-Serine, is a naturally occurring amino acid that plays a crucial role in the interaction between glial cells and synapses, exhibiting distinctive neurotransmitter properties. It serves as an effective co-agonist for the NMDA glutamate receptor. D-Serine is fundamentally involved in several NMDAR-related functions, such as NMDAR-driven neurotransmission, neurotoxicity, synaptic plasticity, and cellular migration^[1]^[2]. (R)-Serine is produced from L-Serine through the action of serine racemase and is broken down by both DAAO and serine racemase. The presence of D-Serine and NMDAR, as confirmed by chemical analysis and immunohistochemical methods, endorses the role of D-Serine as a natural co-agonist at the glycine-binding site on the NR1 subunit of NMDARs^[3].

Administering (R)-Serine orally at a concentration of 10 g/L over a period of 8 weeks has been shown to modulate weight gain induced by a high-fat diet^[4].
