Povidone Iodine (PVP-I) is an antiseptic used for skin disinfection before and after surgery. Povidone iodine displays excellent antibacterial activity which can against MRSA (meticillin-resistant) and MSSA (meticillin-susceptible) strains with MICs (minimum inhibitory concentration) of 31.25 mg/L and 7.82 mg/L, respectively. Treatment of the cells with Povidone iodine (PVP-I) at a dilution of 1:32 causes a sharp reduction in cell viability by 90-95% on all testing cell lines[3]. Povidone iodine has many characteristics that position it extraordinarily well for wound healing, including its broad antimicrobial spectrum, lack of resistance, efficacy against biofilms, good tolerability and its effect on excessive inflammation.[4]. SARS-CoV-2 virus was completely inactivated by PVP-I oral antiseptic rinse in vitro, at the lowest concentration of 0.5 % and at the lowest contact time of 15 seconds[5]. Nasal and oral PVP-I antiseptic solutions are effective at inactivating the SARS-CoV-2 at a variety of concentrations after 60-second exposure times[6].
