Povidone Iodine (PVP-I) is an antiseptic used for skin disinfection before and after surgery. Povidone iodine displays excellent antibacterial activity which can against MRSA (meticillin-resistant) and MSSA (meticillin-susceptible) strains with MICs (minimum inhibitory concentration) of 31.25 mg/L and 7.82 mg/L, respectively. Treatment of the cells with Povidone iodine (PVP-I) at a dilution of 1:32 causes a sharp reduction in cell viability by 90-95% on all testing cell lines[3]. SARS-CoV-2 virus was completely inactivated by PVP-I oral antiseptic rinse in vitro, at the lowest concentration of 0.5 % and at the lowest contact time of 15 seconds[5]. Nasal and oral PVP-I antiseptic solutions are effective at inactivating the SARS-CoV-2 at a variety of concentrations after 60-second exposure times[6].
