Urethane (Ethyl carbamate), the ethyl ester of carbamic acid, is a fermentation byproduct found in various food products and is known to inhibit the growth of bacteria, protozoa, sea urchin eggs, and plant tissues in vitro[1].

Urethane is utilized in animal research to create tumor models and has historically been used to induce hypnosis and narcosis in mammals, fish, and amphibians. When administered at anesthetic doses (1-1.2 g/kg body weight for rats), urethane is generally safe, causing minimal alterations in blood pressure, aortic blood flow, and blood-gas levels[1].
Additionally, at a dosage of 1g/kg IP (administered intraperitoneally), urethane arrests cell division in the crypt of liberkuhn cells in mice[1].

As a clastogen, urethane shows effectiveness in inducing sister chromatid exchanges in various cells and demonstrates variable results with cells in vitro, making it a useful clastogen in mammalian somatic cells in vivo[2].
