Cefazolin, an antibiotic used for the research of a number of anti-bacterial infections, can be used for the prophylaxis of surgical antimicrobial. Cefazolin has anti-inflammatory effect and can attenuate post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). IL-6 and IL-1β levels were decreased by 250 μg/ml cefazolin in the LPS-stimulated C8-B4 cells. Cefazolin (300 mg/kg; injected intraperitoneally 1 h before surgery and then once per day for 5 days after surgery) can attenuate surgery-induced post-operative memory and learning impairment in mice. Cefazolin alone may induce cognitive dysfunction possibly by transient gut dysbiosis in mice without surgery[1]. Cefazolin seemed to be at least equally as effective as ASPs (anti-staphylococcal penicillins) while being associated with less nephrotoxicity[2]. The recovery of cefazolin was high in the neonatal and infant CPB (Cardiopulmonary bypass) systems and moderate in the pediatric system[3]. Application of cefazolin irreversibly inhibits the potential of hMSC for migration to the trauma site and local proliferation. Cefazolin should be administered only at the required dosage and time to prevent periprosthetic infection[4].
