Hypromellose, also known as hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, enhances drug delivery by controlling the drug's release rate, thereby extending its therapeutic effects[1]. This polymer has been employed in sustained-release pharmaceutical formulations for many years. In the manufacturing of matrix tablets, hypromellose absorbs water upon contact, forming a viscous gel barrier around and within the tablet. Factors influencing drug release through hypromellose include the water diffusion rate into the dry polymer, the speed of gelation, the viscosity of the gel, and the rate at which the hypromellose gel erodes[2]. |
