描述 | Dihydrocholesterol, also known as cholestanol or zymostanol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as cholesterols and derivatives. Rabbits fed a diet containing 0.75% dihydrocholesterol for 7 days develop bile acid allodeoxycholic (ADCA) and deoxycholic acid (DCA) stones in the gallbladder[1]. Whereas dihydrocholesterol exhibits a condensing power that is equivalent to that of cholesterol, the action of coprostanol is significantly weaker[2]. Proliferation of the epithelial cells of the gall bladder during the initial stages of experimental cholelithiasis has been studied by autoradiography. Rabbits taking a diet with 1% dihydrocholesterol added showed a rise in labelling index from 1.5%-19% by three days[3]. The auxotroph grows normally on desmosterol and trans-22-dehydrocholesterol and at reduced rates on dihydrocholesterol, campesterol, and 22,23-dihydrobrassicasterol. In cells grown with dihydrocholesterol, a marked increase in desaturation and elongation of fatty acids is noted[4]. |
