描述 | Sulbactam is a competitive, irreversible beta-lactamase inhibitor. Its binding to penicillin-binding proteins imparts weak intrinsic antibacterial activity. Synergy of sulbactam with beta-lactam antibiotics is most marked in bacterial species in which beta lactamase is a major mechanism of resistance. Sulbactam sodium is available in combination with ampicillin sodium for injection in a 1:2 ratio of sulbactam to ampicillin. The minimal toxicity of sulbactam-ampicillin makes the combination appealing for the treatment of gram-negative nonpseudomonal and anaerobic infections[3]. The in-vitro activity of the sulbactam/ampicillin combination was by virtue of the antimicrobial activity exhibited by sulbactam. Sulbactam may prove effective for non-life-threatening A. baumannii infections[4]. Sulbactam combinations have not demonstrated strong selective pressures for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and vancomycin-resistant enterococci. In contrast to clavulanate, sulbactam does not induce class I (Ampc) chromosomal beta-lactamases in Enterobacteriaceae[5]. |
