ossypol, extracted from cottonseeds and roots, is explored as an anticancer agent due to its natural presence and efficacy in clinical trials. The racemic form of Gossypol [(±)-Gossypol] is well tolerated in these studies and demonstrates specific binding to the Bcl-xL and Bcl-2 proteins with Ki values ranging from 0.5 to 0.6 μM and 0.2 to 0.3 mM, respectively. Among its enantiomers, (-)-Gossypol and (+)-Gossypol, the former shows significantly greater growth inhibition in UM-SCC-6 and UM-SCC-14A cell lines in MTT assays over six days. The racemic form [(±)-Gossypol] exhibits an intermediate growth inhibitory effect, most notably at higher doses (10 μM)[1]. |
